Clean-up for Water Quality

Join your neighbors to rake, sweep or shovel leaves, dirt, and debris on the curbs and streets. Phosphorus is a major source of water pollution that causes excessive growth of algae and depletes oxygen needed for fish and native plants. Impervious surfaces, such as city streets and parking lots, provide a pathway for phosphorus to get to local waters, which comes from decaying organic matter like leaves, branches and loose dirt. Fall is one of the peak periods for the introduction of phosphorus from city streets into local waters.
